Government and Hockey Canada Response

Canada’s Secretary of Sport, Adam van Koeverden, issued a statement Friday expressing the federal government's strong opposition to the CAS decision. He emphasized that Canada maintains its stance that Russia should not be represented in international sports competitions while the invasion of Ukraine continues. Van Koeverden stated that Canada will uphold restrictions on Russian athletes at federally funded events hosted in the country and explore further accountability measures.

Hockey Canada announced it is seeking clarity from the IIHF regarding the under-20 tournament's implications, noting that the logistical challenges of accommodating an additional team on short notice remain unaddressed by the court's decision.

International and Community Backlash

Several participating hockey associations voiced dismay over the ruling. Representatives from Finland, Sweden, and Germany criticized the decision, citing security, political, and ongoing conflict concerns. Additionally, Lydia Migus, Alberta chapter president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, condemned the potential return, noting the significant Ukrainian population in Alberta and describing the prospect as a disregard for the ongoing war.
