Man Charged Over Alleged Attack on Australian MP Helen Haines

A 43-year-old man has been formally charged following an alleged car attack on independent Australian federal MP Helen Haines outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, Victoria. Police reported that the incident occurred on Monday afternoon at approximately 15:35 local time on Murphy Street.

The suspect, identified by local media as Brendan Nugent from Tarrawingee, faces three charges: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Investigators stated they will allege the incident was targeted. The suspect is scheduled to appear at the Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Haines, 65, sustained severe injuries, including reportedly losing a leg, and remains hospitalized in a critical but stable condition. Local bystanders intervened during the incident, with a nearby barber credited with pulling the driver from the vehicle and discarding a knife before police arrived within seconds.

In a surprising twist, the suspect's father, Rod Nugent, and his partner released a statement revealing that they had been personal friends with Helen Haines for over 20 years, calling the ordeal "devastating and unfathomable." Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and other international leaders expressed shock and solidarity, while community members gathered for vigils and left floral tributes outside Haines's office.
