The Trump administration has initiated a new effort to prosecute former FBI Director James Comey, filing federal criminal charges in Washington, D.C., that accuse him of transmitting national defense information and conspiracy. The case marks the third federal prosecution brought against Comey by the Justice Department.
Comey's defense team has pushed back strongly against the legal action. Defense attorneys previously filed a motion to dismiss the charges, arguing that the effort is invalid, falls outside the applicable time limits, and relies on an improperly filed "Information" that was neither approved by a grand jury nor a judge. Legal representatives also contended that the prosecutor handling the case was unlawfully appointed.
Responding in a video published on Substack, Comey dismissed the latest accusations and criticized the administration's ongoing legal scrutiny. “Well, they’re back again. It would almost be funny if it weren’t such an appalling abuse of the Department of Justice, one that we cannot become numb to,” Comey said, adding that he intends to fight the charges vigorously in public.
Comey, a frequent critic of Donald Trump, has been a frequent target of the president since leading the initial FBI investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The unsealing of the federal charges coincided with a separate federal court ruling ordering the reinstatement of Comey’s daughter, Maurene Comey, after a judge found she had been unlawfully terminated from the Justice Department last year.
